    How do we find calm amidst the beautiful chaos of the holidays? As we kick off this wonderful week of Thanksgiving, would you rather have five moments or five minutes? We say things like, "wait a moment," using the word as if it is interchangeable with the word minute. However, they are vastly different. Moments are collections of minutes that we savor and transform into memories. Minutes are fleeting. I envision them as thin strips of color that we fuse to build moments.

     

    What if we tried to focus on moments not minutes? I know this can be challenging. Of course, I find myself at work or home, faced with many tasks and saying: "There are not enough minutes in the day!!" In an effort to calm myself, I've started to occasionally track the time it takes to do short tasks like unloading and loading the dishwasher to show myself that some simple tasks really don't take that long. Loading and unloading the dishwasher actually only takes 5 -10 minutes. This can help make a long todo list seem a little more manageable, and it can help free up time to look for and create moments in each day.


    While I don't think our busy days are going to slow down, especially during the holiday season, we can shift our focus to moments.  If a day is filled with stress, we can try to break up the tension by adding some moments or reflecting on recent happy moments. We can savor having a few extra minutes to enjoy coffee or tea in the morning. While it can be hectic preparing to entertain, we can find joy in the laughter we share as we prep Thanksgiving dinner with family. We can take a quick walk outside in the sunshine and perhaps feel invigorated by the cold air. We can give thanks for the talk we we will have with an old friend which will remind us that those old memories will never stop being funny. We can realize that music can add a spark to almost anything. We can savor the sweetness of a successful meal celebrated with a shared dessert around the table with family. 

     

    A way to train your brain to track moments is to reflect or write down at least three things that you are grateful for at the end of your day. When I do this, it ends my days on a positive note and calms me before going to sleep.

     

    Moments can happen anywhere and at anytime. Like confetto, they can be anything that you want them to be. They have no set rules or ingredients except for hopefully causing happiness. I hope your week is filled with moments instead of minutes.
