    Winter comfort

    January 18, 2018

You may not realize it, but there are things or rituals we do each day that bring us comfort or help to set the tone for the day. I like to make our bed every morning. I don't always feel like doing it, but it takes less than a minute. It pulls the room together, and it's nice to come home to a made bed after a long day.

I love coffee, and I always enjoy the first sip of coffee in the morning. It tells my mind it's time to start the day and do my best. It's energizing, and it tastes even better with peppermint creamer enjoyed on a slow weekend morning by the fire. At the end of the day, it's already dark when I get home. I love putting on comfortable clothes and relaxing by the fire. Rather we realize it or not we give our bodies and minds cues to relax. When you are snuggled up with a delicious cup of tea, you are telling your mind it's okay to chill. It's okay to let go of the massive to do list that is swirling around your brain. It's okay to stop thinking about all of the events on your calendar and the chores to do at home.

You allow yourself: body, mind and spirit to breath and heal. We need time to collect our thoughts, and I think there is comfort but also the opportunity for training in rituals. Consider lighting the same candle each night as you curl up with a good book. You may start to associate the smell with relaxing. Or, take a hot bath with Epsom salts or essential oils to release tension from your muscles and your mind. Baths have been proven to have many benefits for the body and mind.  The same may be the case if you use essential oil during meditation or put it on before you go to sleep. I love to mix different relaxing essential oil blends and diffuse them in our bedroom while we sleep.

I recently tried to make bath bombs and sugar scrubs. It was fun to try a new craft, and I've learned that focusing on a single task can be a great way to release stress and clear your mind. When you are cooking, baking or working on a craft or project, it usually requires focus, so you can't be distracted by stress or worries. Winter is a great time to try new indoor projects.

This season is also a wonderful time to revel in all things cozy. It's a chance to combat the fact that it gets dark early by enjoying candles, blankets, warm beverages, hearty food, drinks by the fire, and warmth. There are cozy scarves and sweaters and all kinds of warm drinks. The snow coats trees, lawns and homes with irresistible sparkle, and it can be beautiful. The next time you feel stressed and disappointed by another gray, winter day, look around your home for winter comfort. I think you may realize it's closer than you think.
