Nourish November: November 24- Progressive Muscle Relaxation for Stress and Pain Relief

Updated: Nov 28, 2020

Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) is a tool that I've used to fight migraine pain. I love trying things for pain and stress management that do not involve medicines. One of the benefits of PMR is that you can do it anywhere.

As the name suggests, it involves progressively relaxing your muscles. The basic procedure is to alternate between breathing in and tensing certain muscle groups and then breathing out and relaxing the muscles. You repeat this procedure all over your body. It's best to do this laying down or sitting in a comfortable position. For a complete instructions and additional details on PMR, you can visit this link from the University of Michigan.

The premise of this therapy is that relaxing muscles can help with pain management and stress. The body responds to stress by tensing muscles. PMR helps to relax muscles all over your body, which can relieve tension and anxiety.

I've been amazed at how PMR has helped me with migraines, and it has certainly lessened the pain. I also feel more calm after this therapy. You can do PMR to help with specific aches and pains, to destress after a hard day, or to help you fall asleep. I can't recommend it enough, and I hope you will give it a try.
