Mise en Place for Life
This week I finally realized I need to move my socks from a bottom drawer. I wear them every day, so it makes sense they should be in a place I can easily reach. However, I’ve kept them in a bottom drawer for years, and it never occurred to me move them. Why have I not thought of this before? I don’t know. It’s so easy to go along with how life is in a certain way, even if it causes struggles. Change is hard, even if it benefits you.
What are you doing in your life that you’ve always done but is actually making things harder for you? Is your closet stuffed with clothes you aren’t wearing during the pandemic? Could you move the clothes you are not wearing to another place, so you have more room to access what you need?
There is an expression in cooking, which is: “mise en place”. It means having the ingredients, tools, and everything else you need prepped and ready before you start cooking. It takes some extra work to do this, but it makes cooking so much easier and more enjoyable.
I like the idea of creating “mise en place” for life. What small changes can you make to lower your stress levels and make life easier? It might be laying out clothes for you and your children before you go to sleep. Or, it could be meal prepping or making meals that have a few nights of leftovers. Maybe your bathroom or kitchen drawers are messy, and you are always struggling to find certain things. You can organize them, so you can really see what you have and what you need.
It’s worth taking a 360 look at your life from an objective view to see what you do to make your days go more smoothly. Think about the times during your day that cause stress. I know I get stressed whenever I see a mess of Tupperware containers in our pantry, so I’m going to organize those. It’s worth taking the time to do things you don’t want to do, if it makes many days in the future easier. Show yourself love and make things easier by setting up your life for success.
