Go for it
As a new mom, it’s harder than I could have imagined to leave my baby girl. Pre-baby, a mani/pedi followed by delicious food and cocktails was one of my very favorite things to do. You couldn't have stopped me from going. But, last Friday, when I was headed to this very thing with my close girlfriends, it was tough to leave.
However, if I’m honest with myself, it's not hard to find a reason to say no to a trip, a girl’s night, a new workout, a race, a game night, etc. Our minds are on overload, and it can feel like there is always something to do, to fix or someone we need to be. It can feel indulgent to put all of that aside for an evening, an afternoon or a week, but it's one of the best things we can do.
I believe that I am a better wife, mother and more-centered person when I've had some time to myself for fun or self care. I am realizing that self care can come in the form of laughing with girlfriends or on a weekend getaway with my husband. Our worries, concerns, chores and bills, are not going anywhere. So, why don't we put them on the shelf and take that cooking class or book that beach getaway. Life is fleeting and precious. We are better at everything we do when we are refreshed.
It's like how you see different things in a draft after you've walked away from it for a while. You see your life in new and beautiful ways when you've had some space away. I had the best time getting a mani/pedi and then eating one of the most delicious meals I've had in a long time.. I'm still dreaming of the burrata and mushroom crostini with truffle oil. It was such a treat to be out for the evening, but I also couldn't wait to see my little one. I was so excited for her to wake up in the morning, and I saw her with fresh eyes.
Rest can come in many forms. It's not selfish to take time for yourself when it helps your overall health and wellbeing. Go for the long bike ride or walk. Take up a new hobby, painting or DIY. We can find peace in the most unexpected places. I find it through my workout classes. Those 60 minutes force to me to focus on the tasks at hand, so I don't hurt myself. My mind is clear during this time, and I feel refreshed and renewed after the sessions. Peace doesn't always mean a silent room. Stepping away to make time for yourself is one of the bravest things you can do.
